Incorporating absurdity, surrealism, and a dash of swashbuckling humor, Death Springs Eternal reaches far back into the consciousness of its protagonists. In a place where a pre-World War II construction might as well be from the age of the Roman Empire, notions of the past become warped, microwaved versions of a greater historical understanding. The film reminds us of how this has affected Miami's sense of self, and that of its inhabitants. Although centuries have come and gone since grimy, bearded adventurers traipsed through the mosquito-infested swamps of Florida on their futile quest for gold, an unexpected encounter shows us that sometimes, the past is far closer and more lucid than it appears.
"Death Springs Eternal" is an ode to the complicated history of the city and its peculiar juxtaposition of cultures.
