Yara Travieso is a choreographer, dancer, director and video artist noted for her cinematic approach to multimedia productions and installations.
Travieso is based in Brooklyn, NY and was born to Cuban and Venezuelan parents in Miami FL. Her recent full-length works were presented in NYC’s Lincoln Center, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, The Juilliard School, and Miami’s New World Symphony Center. Her video/installation pieces have been presented in NYC’s New Museum, Streaming Museum, Chelsea’s Flomenhaft Gallery, Miami’s Dorsch Gallery, The Locust Projects and reside in international collections.
Hermes of Paris and Glamour Magazine have both commissioned original video art pieces from Travieso. A 2012-13 artist in Residence at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Travieso created the original opera, Kwaidan, with composer Jerome Begin.
Other residencies include: The Bessie Schonberg International Choreographic Residency, The Stepping Grounds Artists Residency in Netherlands, as well as NYC’s Imagine Science Film Festival Residency. She is the recipient of an individual artist sponsorship from Kodak Films, and her works have been awarded The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Arts Challenge Grant, The San Francisco Foundation Artist Award, The Miami Chamber of Commerce Grant and is a 2005 YoungArts winner in both dance and choreography.
Also engaged with musical projects, Travieso has directed and choreographed productions for Cincinnati Opera, Birmingham Opera, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Texas State Orchestra, and Juilliard’s Beyond the Machine Festival, as well as performed with the Metropolitan Opera. Travieso is engaged in giving lectures and workshops with institutions such as The Juilliard School, Fordham University, MoMa, and The YoungArts Organization. She received her HS diploma from New World School for The Arts, Miami FL, and her BFA for Dance at The Juilliard School in 2009, NYC.
