Multidimensional Narratives Commissions

This is a new program we are starting this year. We are issuing an open call for storytellers who want to create narratives that exist in multiple dimensions.

This is purposefully vague, but some examples include:

  • Virtual reality projects using the Oculus rift
  • Interactive story installations using projection mapping and/or Microsoft Kinects
  • Low-fi experiential projects such as haunted houses
  • Augmented reality adventures
  • Web-based projects
  • Large scale hoaxes

Each story should have a definite beginning and end. Projects must also engage Miami and artists must be from, living in, or inspired by the city.

All of the projects will be showcased in a large venue during the 2014 Borscht Film Festival in December, which will be turned into THE MULTIVERSE, the world’s first DIY theme park by artists. An ‘artmusement park’ if you want to be cute.

As such, a good way to think about these works are as “rides” or attractions at a warped Disney World.

Applicants do not necessarily need to be technically savvy. Storytellers may be teamed up with technical collaborators from the Lab Miami tech hub. Oculus Rift Virtual Reality development kits will also be made available to projects.

Deadline is April 15th, 2014

Here is a sample project in development:

THE VANILLA ICE EXPERIENCE

by Mayer/Leyva

Users will sit in a modified convertible car affixed to a hydraulic stage. Each user will wear an Oculus Rift VR headset and headphones. They will be taken on a tour of a virtual museum chronicling the rise and fall of Vanilla Ice, as well as his last hours of existence as the last man on Earth, floating through space on a chunk of rock like "The Little Prince." As the virtual ride moves, stagehands will move the car to match the movements, and users will also feel elements such as splashing water and heat from fire in the real world as they see them in virtual reality.

Unfortunately submissions are not currently being accepted, but sign up for our mailing list to be notified of our next call for entries.
